Sensory Profile Assessments for Children & Adolescents

Sometimes Behavior Is Communicating a Need.

Children and adolescents often express sensory needs through behavior — long before they have the language to explain what they are experiencing.

Openness With Therapy provides comprehensive sensory profile assessments for children and adolescents. When a child's behavior feels confusing or hard to reach, understanding how they process sensory information can offer another piece of the picture.

You Are Not Alone

Does This Sound Familiar?

These are some of the ways sensory processing differences can show up in children and adolescents — often expressed through behavior rather than words.

Becoming overwhelmed in noisy or crowded environments
Strong reactions to sounds that others seem to tune out
Clothing or texture sensitivity — refusing certain fabrics or tags
Seeking movement, jumping, spinning, or crashing into things
Avoiding particular activities, environments, or physical contact
Difficulty with transitions between activities or settings
Emotional dysregulation following sensory-heavy experiences
Difficulty processing verbal information in busy environments
Strong preference for familiar places, routines, or predictability

A Broader Picture

Looking Beyond the Behavior

Behavior is communication. When children and adolescents struggle to regulate, avoid certain environments, or react in ways that feel disproportionate, there is often something meaningful underneath — and sensory processing is one important lens for understanding it.

A sensory profile assessment does not replace other evaluations or explain everything. It adds a layer of understanding that can help parents, caregivers, and professionals respond more effectively — and help children and adolescents feel more understood.

Sensory processing differences do not cause behavioral or mental health conditions. However, unaddressed sensory needs can contribute to stress, dysregulation, and difficulty functioning in everyday environments.

Who This Assessment Serves

Understanding Across Roles

Parents & Caregivers

If you have noticed patterns in your child's behavior that feel hard to explain — meltdowns in certain environments, strong reactions to clothing or food textures, difficulty with transitions — a sensory profile assessment can help you understand what your child may be experiencing. The results provide language, context, and practical strategies you can use at home and share with your child's school or treatment team.

Adolescents

Adolescents are often aware that they experience the world differently — but may not have a framework for understanding why. A sensory profile assessment offers a non-judgmental, strengths-based way to explore how you process sensory input and how that shapes your experience at school, with friends, and at home. Understanding your sensory profile is not about labeling yourself — it is about knowing yourself better.

Professionals

For therapists, educators, occupational therapists, and other professionals working with children and adolescents, a sensory profile assessment can provide standardized data that complements clinical observations and informs intervention planning. Results are delivered in a written report suitable for inclusion in treatment plans, IEP documentation, or multidisciplinary team discussions.
