You Are Not Alone

Does This Sound Familiar?

Many adults have lived with sensory differences for years without ever having a name for what they experience. These are some of the ways sensory processing differences can show up in adult life.

Feeling overwhelmed by noise or crowds

Difficulty concentrating with background noise

Sensitivity to bright or flickering lighting

Strong reactions to certain smells

Clothing or texture sensitivity that affects comfort

Discomfort with unexpected or uninvited touch

Seeking movement, pressure, or physical input to feel regulated

Feeling exhausted after highly stimulating environments

Needing quiet or solitude to recover after social events

Becoming overwhelmed when multiple things happen at once

Why It Matters

Sensory Processing in Everyday Adult Life

Sensory processing differences don't exist in isolation — they weave through the most important areas of adult life. Understanding your sensory profile can help you make sense of patterns you may have noticed for years.

Work

Open offices, fluorescent lighting, background conversations, and back-to-back meetings can be genuinely draining for adults with sensory sensitivities. Understanding your sensory profile can help you identify accommodations, advocate for your needs, and structure your work environment in ways that support your focus and energy.

Relationships

Sensory differences can affect how you experience physical closeness, crowded social gatherings, noise levels at home, and the pace of conversation. A sensory profile assessment can open up language for conversations with partners, family members, and friends — helping others understand your needs rather than misreading them as preference or avoidance.

Daily Life

From grocery stores and commutes to meal textures and clothing choices, sensory processing shapes the texture of everyday living. Many adults develop workarounds without realizing it. Understanding why certain environments or experiences feel difficult can reduce self-criticism and support more intentional self-care.

The Assessment

An Assessment for Understanding

A sensory profile assessment is not about finding something wrong with you. It is about understanding how you experience the world — and why certain environments, interactions, or routines feel the way they do.

The Sensory Profile assessment used at Openness With Therapy is a standardized, evidence-based tool that maps your sensory processing patterns across multiple systems. The results provide a detailed picture of your sensory thresholds, preferences, and tendencies.

This assessment does not diagnose autism, ADHD, or any mental health condition. It is a tool for self-understanding — one that can complement other evaluations, inform therapeutic work, or simply give you a clearer picture of how you are wired.
